Annual Parochial Church Council Meeting on Sunday 23rd April at Byfield Village Hall. Followed by tea and cake and a chance to chat with other PCC members. Concern has been expressed about the health of the yew tree outside the South Porch. Due to the tree’s age (estimated to be over 1,000 years old), specialists have told us that last year’s extremely hot and dry weather may have affected it. Starting this April, holes will be dug around the roots and over the next 12 months or so treatments will be applied. A slow process due to the age of the tree. We apologise if the path to the church isn’t sometimes quite as tidy as usual but we are keen to help the tree continue to grow for another 500 years.
Sunday 2nd April – Palm Sunday
10.30 am Ecumenical blessing of the palms and procession to the churches. This will be followed by a service in St Leonard’s. All very welcome. Meet at Welsh Road end of Main Street.

News from St Leonard’s Aug/Sept
First of all, a huge thank you to all those who braved the rather damp afternoon of the Summer Fete. We raised the magnificent sum of £1,243.06 towards the £15,000 a year that it costs to keep the Church open for Public Worship and Private Prayer.
We are delighted to report that the final phase of the major Restoration program is now completed and we have sufficient funds to cover the cost. This is thanks to private donations, fund raising efforts and grants in response to the Appeal.

The Remembrance Service was especially moving this year. The service was led by Mike and the thought-provoking address given by Johnnie. The Roman Catholics joined us at the War Memorial for the Last Post and Reveille which was beautifully played by Eoin. Matt read out the names of the men on the War Memorial and the Dedication. After the laying of the wreaths Father John gave the blessing.
A huge thank you to all who contributed in any way, by donating goods, manning the stalls or adding to the great atmosphere. We raised the magnificent sum of £935.25 towards the upkeep of St Leonard’s.

Great news from St Leonard’s, we will be open for public worship this Easter
Paul, our new Rector has worked out how we can have a service in all five churches.
Hygiene advice to be followed, please wear a face mask, use hand gel and keep 2 metres apart, thank you.
Feb/Mar 2021
St Leonard’s and the rest of the parishes in the Fiveways Benefice have made the difficult decision to close for public worship during this period of lockdown. We are currently running a Zoom service at 6pm on a Sunday; please email Lesley Palmer (lep23a@gmail.com) if you wish to receive an invitation to this service. Revd Paul hopes to introduce a streamed Sunday Morning worship service over the coming weeks and please keep an eye on the Church notice board for details of this new streamed service and information on when the church will reopen for public worship.
Dec 2020/Jan 2021
There are no formal services at St. Leonard’s during this lockdown which meant a very small Remembrance Day service at the War Memorial.
Our new Rector, Revd Paul Trathen is joining our Benefice on Wednesday 6th January so he may change the pattern of services. And of course, plans may change with any new Government or Church rulings.
For obvious reasons, there won’t be a Walking Nativity this year. Really sad as there has been one every year for the past 30 years or so, but we have to comply!
Please remember that St. Leonard’s is always open for anyone who wants a peaceful and holy space for private and individual quietness.
Oct/Nov 2020
Rev Stevie Cross has now retired from being our Rector at St. Leonard’s after 9 years with us. We wish her well in her retirement and we are very grateful for all her work amongst us. She will be greatly missed.
We are incredibly lucky to have found a new Rector so quickly after Stevie’s retirement. The new incumbent is the Rev Paul Trathen and he comes to us from Walthamstow in East London. We don’t yet have a start date but we are hoping very much that we can welcome Paul early in the New Year. Paul will live with his family at the Rectory in Byfield.
Until Paul’s arrival, our services at St. Leonard’s will be a little less frequent than usual. And we will have to adhere to Government Covid restrictions on numbers.
Aug/Sept 2020
The Rev Stevie Cross
As I am sure you are already aware, Stevie Cross retired as Rector on 31st May after 11 years serving the Benefice. Due to the Corona Virus putting a pause on arrangements, she has stayed on for three months as Priest in Charge.
Her last day in the Benefice is Sunday 30th August and, hopefully, we will be able to have a service in Byfield on that day for the whole Benefice. This, of course, depends on the regulations current at the time. Please see the notice for details nearer the time.
Stevie will be taking on communion service in each of the five churches during August and our service will be on Sunday
Harvest Festival at St Leonard’s will be on Sunday 4th October at 5 pm led by Lesley Palmer. Due to the Covid19 Virus there will not be an auction this year so NO fresh produce but donations of non-perishable goods, which can be donated to the Food Bank please.
For services in other churches please see the Pew Sheet in the porch. We do hope you will join us for one or more of these services.
June/July 2020
Dates for your Diaries: I regret to inform you that all future events have had to be postponed. We do hope that it may be possible to hold the Silent Auction in the Autumn. Watch this space.
It is with great sadness that all services in the church continue to be cancelled and the church closed, even for private prayer. As soon as the restrictions are lifted, we will put a notice on the gate of the church. The Rector is available on 01327 260204 for advice or guidance. Do listen to the Sunday service on BBC Radio 4 after the 8 am news and or Morning Worship about 10.30 on BBC 1 TV or Songs of Praise which usually follows the 1 pm news on BBC1 TV.
Online giving
During this difficult time when our church buildings are closed, we are still a church; meeting virtually for prayer services and fellowship, loving our neighbours by offering practical support to the vulnerable, and caring for our communities. The work of churches is reliant on people’s generosity, a generosity that is a hallmark of a lived-out faith and a testament to it [If you would like to make a donation please leave a comment here and it will be passed on to the relevent person, thank you.]
If you would like a copy of the weekly Pew Sheet sent to you by email please leave a comment here or else collect a printed copy from the windowsill in the porch.
I am sure you will be pleased to hear that Stevie Cross is to be appointed as “House for Duty” priest on 1st June. This is because she is unable to move house during the lockdown and has kindly offered to continue to look after us for at least the next three months. This will not affect the appointment process as any one appointed would not be able to move either.
At this anxious time, it is even more urgent that we support the Food Banks to help those in greatest need.
